Home planet: Íphael (engl.: Osiris B-1, formerly: Palangónia)
Aequoise Šelgtúa said, during her trial, that “five million years of modern civilization” had not managed that “a woman’s opinion is equal to a man’s”. Actually, Aequoise exaggerates a bit when telling us that, because only the race of the Palanians is five million years old, not their modern civilization, which is usually counted from when they arrived on Íphael in 3, Wúhang.
The Palanians left their planet and spent many generations in outer space, during which they developed their Utopian system. We know that the race of the Palanians is about 5 million years old from the Palanian records. As for the Alonians, it is more difficult to determine how old their race is, as a lot of the records before the colonization of Íphael have been destroyed or damaged. Also, the Alonians state that they have been created by their ancestors, so data of the evolution of the Alonians and how they evolved is missing.
Character and personality
The name “Palania” derives from “palan” or “pellón”, an ancient Palanian (Mexala-talámy) word with the meaning “scientist”, or “wise”. “Palan” in Mexala-talámy is still used for “science”, and “palanqiéd” (thank you) actually derived from “palan y ya éde” (“The wisdom is with you”, which can be translated as “May the wisdom be with you”).
The Palanians have always been a people of scientists with the aim to evolve. The sentence “Progress is the utmost asset of society” is engraved into the entrance to the palace of the head of state (“Šayar”) in Mexalapan in Palania. Whilst not as inclined to war and tradition as the Alonians, the Palanians can be considered conquerors, and very ambitious.
The Palanian culture is quite different from the Alonian. The Palanians do not have a religion like the Alonians, and the “Wisdom” is a collection of wise texts that are more practical and mathematical than religious. The Palanian culture embraces success, progress, and evolution. Success is very celebrated, but it can be hard to achieve, because the expectations—and the competition—can be huge.
It might seem understandable, that the thought of the Palanians that progress is the most important thing of society, and the tradition of the Alonians that no rules must be changed, led to the Palanians and Alonians being at strife for several times.
The very peculiar economy of Palania, which slowly conquered whole Eqilonia after they had arrived on Íphael, was developed during their stay in outer space as civilization without a home planet. After living in a spaceship colony for generations, the Palanians recognized that a society in which people could get prices for their work, but not use them (because the spaceship colony could not offer many opportunities where they could have used them), would not work. People would not have enough motivation to work hard, but without a price, they would have no motivation. This is when they introduced what has been translated into English as the “Utopian system”, because of the complete absence of any physical money. With the new system, people could profit, but given that there weren’t many opportunities to use money in a spaceship colony economy, and no space to store it, the system rewarded people with things such as larger spaces to dwell.
